Hi Randy
=20
I have a Saw-whet that I received Feb 15th from a resident in town. =
Again it regrettably died through the night the day I received it.=20
=20
I also collected a pellet it left in the box I when I retrieved it. If =
you'd like to have it, I can also place it in the same bag as the Owl. =
I'll drop it off next time I'm in Antigonish.

Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Saw-whet Owl (dead)
The birds can handle harsh, but the access to food is critical. Unlike =
weasels, which seem abundant this year, owls can't hunt under the snow =
(not deep snow). The Great Grey is a specialist at deep snow plunging, =
but most owls can't go that deep, and we don't have that nice soft snow =
out here anyway.
The current state of knowledge on over-wintering Saw-whets is that =
it's only the adult males which do so. Migration is dominated by hatch =
year birds and there is a paucity of adult males caught at migration =
stations.
I'd like to see all winter-killed birds, if logistically possible.
Randy

Sad Ken, tis the season unfortunately. I think this winter will be =
hard on hatch year birds. We see a lot of birds of prey and it always =
seems like the numbers are higher in winters when the climate is harsh. =
Haven't had a pile of Saw Whets this year but had had quite a few =
Barreds.=20
