The birds can handle harsh, but the access to food is critical. Unlike
weasels, which seem abundant this year, owls can't hunt under the snow (not
deep snow). The Great Grey is a specialist at deep snow plunging, but most
owls can't go that deep, and we don't have that nice soft snow out here
anyway.

The current state of knowledge on over-wintering Saw-whets is that it's only
the adult males which do so. Migration is dominated by hatch year birds and
there is a paucity of adult males caught at migration stations.

I'd like to see all winter-killed birds, if logistically possible.
