Hello All=2C
=20
For the last day of winter=2C this group of about 20 naturalists had gre=
at weather and good birding. A more complete report will be prepared for N=
S Bitds and the BNS Newsletter=2C but here are some highlights.
Gadwall=2C Eurasian Green-winged Teal (male=2C plus a N.A. one=2C both=
courting a presumed A. c. carolinensis female)=2C 90+ Buffleheads=2C 12+ R=
ing-necked Ducks=2C pairs of Common and Red-breasted Mergansers=2C etc.=2C =
at Annapolis Royal Marsh.
Seven species of sea ducks=2C including good looks at about 7 Harlequi=
ns at Port George=2C and a flock of 34 Black Scoters that we saw at Morden =
flying west=2C and then were able to add to our Annapolis Co. lists at Marg=
aretsville about one hour later.
Also at the three ports=2C but especially from near the light at Marga=
retsville=2C a good variety of other sea birds=2C including Common and Red-=
throated Loons=2C Horned & Red-necked Grebes=2C Black Guillemots=2C a flyby=
Great Cormorant (Port George)=2C not very co-operative murres (a Thick-bil=
led at Port George and a probable Common at Margaretsville)=2C and a specta=
cularly white immature Iceland Gull that flew near the light at Margaretsvi=
lle.=20
A male Northern Harrier that gave us a close flypast at the meeting po=
int in Aylesford=2C and a Turkey Vulture in the North Kingston area.=20
While we were stopped in the Aylesford area to look for a flicker that=
had called=2C an immature Northern Shrike flew into a roadside tree=2C the=
n posed in a nearby orchard long enough to allow several to view it with th=
eir scopes.
A Northern Cardinal and many migrant Song Sparrows at Audrey Wellwood'=
s feeding station in Aylesford=2C and at least two Hoary Redpolls among the=
60+ Commons at Helen Sharp's in Margaretsville stood out among the feeder =
observations=2C although early Red-winged Blackbirds=2C American Robins=2C =
and even common Grackles were great to see and hear. Our thanks go to thes=
e ladies and other feeder operators who offered their hospitality=2C altoug=
h time did not permit us to get to all of them.
And yes=2C our luck continued in the p.m.=2C and the female Yellow-he=
aded Blackbird at the Bent farm north of Middleton was by the roadside=2C s=
unning itself with starlings on a woodpile=2C and allowing most a view of i=
t.
=20
Our consensus was that it was very enjoyable=2C but too long=2C and w=
ould be better spread over two days next year=2C as has been done with the =
Antigonish and Guysborough Co. trips in recent years. Other participants m=
ay have had different highlights or comments=2C and all feedback is welcome=
.
