Today, April 25, 2011, at 6:30 pm, In Jollimore (HRM), under a piece of rock, after hours of sunshine: a small (9 +/- 1 cm long, 5 mm thick) Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus). I had never seen one in the wild, and was intrigued by its small size. Thus, I consulted John Gilhen, Amphibians and Reptiles of Nova Scotia, 1984, who claims the earliest record as May 7, 1972. Via wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diadophis_punctatus) I learned that Ringneck Snakes are venomous (but only slightly and of no danger to humans). And the local subspecies (Northern Ringneck Snake, D. punctatus edwardsi) does not even have fangs. Burkhard
