Here in Waverley, the Beech trees have suffered some sort of attack by,
perhaps, a fungus. The tips of the leaves are curled and brown, and
there are white threads on the brown areas. The damage is so severe and
universal that beech trees can be recognized at a considerable distance
by the discolouration of the foliage.

I've lived here for over 30 years and this is the first time that I have
seen this. I wonder if our very wet Spring had anything to do with it.

You can see a couple of photos of the damage here
<http://www.pbase.com/ppayzant/beeches> . I'm interested in knowing if
this problem has occurred anywhere else in the province, and of course
if anyone has any theory about what the damage is due to, that would be
interesting as well.
