--Boundary_(ID_KG5I6vVPkLBMfkYcDCuXPg) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT JUNE 12, 2011 - I had a lot of help in watching a very good swifts "show" and in counting 126+ chimney swifts at dusk at Wolfville's Robie Tufts Nature Centre as they dropped into the chimney for the night. Chris Field was among 15+ statisticians from around the world (convention on at Acadia Univ.). This is another heartening count, like the 109 on June 10/11, because it equals or betters our counts for Wolfville over the past 4 years or more. Observations from 8:35 to 9:30 p.m. (Sunset at 8:49 (Herald) to 8:51 (table for 45 degrees north). Sky brightly overcast, with a slight breeze to no wind, and coolish at 16 C. Many of the swifts were in a loose flock that made low swoops and passes by the chimney top, followed by disappearing for a few minutes, and then returning to do the same thing, over and over for 15 + minutes, before they began dropping into the chimney. First swift in was at 9:08 p.m., and by 9:10 a total of 110 had entered. Then 10 more in at 9:15, 1 more at 9:19, 3 more at 9:21, 1 more at 9:23, and finally 1 more at 9:30, when it was very difficult to see late entries. My total count tonight was 126+ (the plus is partly for any later entries after dark, but exits then are also very possible, and something I would like to know more about). The entries tonight were gradual enough, and my concentration on counting good enough, that I am confident with my total. Chris Field's count was about 10 swifts less than mine, and other counts from the statisticians were all considerably less, which surprised me a bit but perhaps shouldn't have.
