JUNE 16, 2011 - The Wolfville Public Library now has chrysalises
(pupae) of painted lady butterflies that have emerging adults. One
adult emerged yesterday, another is close to emerging (colours can be
seen through the transparent chrysalis, and there are several other
chrysalises at various stages of development. The caterpillars and
special food were ordered from a captive-breeding source that schools
use. Check this out at the information desk in the library, which
was converted from the old railroad station. By the way, the painted
lady is one of our native species of butterfly; check in the field
guides and find out about the ongoing Maritimes Butterfly Atlas project.

Another site in Wolfville for these captive-bred and mailed painted
lady caterpillars to butterflies is the Irving Envir. Science
Centre. Check at the information desk and in the Conservatory, where
yesterday I saw chrysalises placed (hanging) on leafy stems of
planted black-eyed Susans.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
