Tonight the swifts formed a large loose flock that flew fairly high over the nature centre and chittered for a very long time before all going into the chimney very rapidly. This pre-roosting social behaviour is quite variable from night to night, and tonight they really made us wait and wait. Observations were from 8:40 to 9:35 p.m., and Sunset was at about 9:02. Sky was clear, air was calm and cool but comfortable at 15 C. The first swift went into the chimney quite late at 9:28, and the approx. 145 were all in by 9:30. I wasn't very attentive for the next 5 minutes, but no additional swifts were seen. Observers were numerous and included Tuma Young and Nick Honig trying to get photographs, plus Lauren Park and friend, 2 people from Barrie, Ontario, about 10 others, and Jim Wolford. My estimate of 145 + was the only estimate offered, and I think it was a fair estimate plus or minus 10% or less.
