Regarding noise for bears (and coyotes), Nova Scotia has never had a
black bear attack a human, as far as I know. And N.S. has oodles of
bears, but they keep their distance from us humans, although they do
become nuisance bears of course on honey and corn and bird feeders
etc. -- NSDNR (Nat. Resources has all sorts of data on this over the
years).

Besides bells, some people apparently carry cans filled with pebbles
to make noise as they walk in the woods. A good loud whistle is
probably another good idea.

The only bear I have ever surprised was a small black bear in Banff
Nat. Park in Alberta, and the bear was long gone before I even
realized what I had scared up (pre-dawn).

But in B.C. and perhaps Alberta and elsewhere, grizzly bears have
come to associate shots fired by hunters as dinner bells, so that
hunters have to be very wary when quartering and cleaning up their
moose, elk, deer kills to watch for attracted bears.

Cheers? from Jim in Wolfville
