There was an adult male Ruff in moulting breeding plumage at Shorebird Cove in Three Fathom Harbour this afternoon, with the first returning Short-billed Dowitchers (113) and yellowlegs, as well as Willets with downy young and a Spotted Sandpiper. About a quarter of the dowitchers were the hendersoni subspecies.

The Ruff had rufous/orange colouring with black markings on the head and upperparts, and a black ruff, breast and flanks, with a white belly and undertail coverts. Legs were pale pinkish-ornage, bill pale orange with black tip. In size, it was larger, longer-legged and chunkier than the nearby dowitchers, which it was chasing.

Birders are welcome to walk down the lane to the cove, but I would appreciate your not going beyond the base of the road where it meets the cove, to avoid disturbing nesting and migrating birds.

Cheers,
Susann Myers
