Migration numbers for Short-billed Dowitchers would normally be peaking this week or next along the Eastern shore (Three Fathom Harbour, Cole Harbour etc.). Instead, numbers peaked in Three Fathom Harbour around July 12, and have decreased steadily since:

July 3 125
July 12 565 (combined count, Ian McLaren & me)
July 16 198
July 23 77
July 25 51 - at a date when the peak number of about 900-1100 would normally be present.

Similarly, I found only 263 at the Cole Harbour Saltmarsh Trail on July 24, when 3000 to 5000 is a normal count.

I have also not yet seen a juvenile this year. All of which suggests that this has been a disastrous breeding season for this species.

I would be very glad to know what other shorebirders have been finding, about dowitchers and shorebird numbers in general.

Many thanks,
Susann Myers
