The reality is that neither Steve nor Bill is a scientist. They are 
brilliant entrepreneurs who have taken what scientists and engineers 
have developed and sold it, much to the delight (and mostly benefit) of 
all of us (and certainly to their shareholders).

I would add to the list Bill Joy, who probably has more to do with the 
fact we are communicating this way than either of the two other guys.

By the way, if you've read Malcolm Gladwell's _Outliers_, you'll know 
that Gates, Joy, Jobs, et al. were very lucky boys -- the right time in 
the right place with the right people to mentor them, and the 
opportunity to follow their dreams. Meanwhile, the scientists and 
engineers keep plodding away and making their contributions where they can.
