Hi=2C
There are indeed several apps related to nature and birding for the iPhone.=
There are several versions of the iBird app that Mary mentions=2C but I pe=
rsonally prefer the Sibley app=2C for visual and aural ID=2C mainly because=
I find his illustrations helpful and more useful than iBird=2C and the voc=
alizations are just as good=2C if not better. It's like having a complete S=
ibley field guide in the pocket complete with calls and songs you can hear.
There are also some bird listing apps available - I just got one called My =
Bird Observatons=2C for $2.99=2C and I used it on Brier Island this weekend=
. It's easy to remember the rarities or "special" birds=2C but where this s=
ort of app is useful is =2C e.g. when submitting a list to eBird=2C or NS B=
irds=2C etc.=2C I find it easier to list common things like Crows and Herri=
ng gulls at the time=2C as I tend to forget how many I have seen by later i=
n the day.
Of course all this stuff is great as long as the electronics work=2C and on=
e could argue that a paper and pencil does the same job=2C but personally I=
have taken to these iPhone apps (and I have many others=2C including Kindl=
e=2C on which I can read almost any book=2C Pocket Universe=2C which is gre=
at for the night sky=2C Weather Eye=2C which gives me the forecast=2C etc. =
etc.). I believe all these are also available for the Android system as wel=
l.
