Apologies for not seeing Jim Edsall's diagnosis of a bedstraw hawk
moth or bedstraw sphinx moth, Hyles gallii. But I want to amend what
I said below re books for caterpillars. Besides the affordable
Golden Guide to Butterflies and Moths, which has lots of
illustrations of caterpillars, there is the Peterson First Guide to
CATERPILLARS (1993) by Amy Bartlett Wright, and then there is the
large tome, "Caterpillars of Eastern North America" (2005) by David
L. Wagner (Princeton Univ. Press).

Also, BEWARE: most hawk or sphinx moths have "hornworms" for
caterpillars, but the family is diverse enough, like most of nature,
so that the "rule" doesn't always hold true. I.e., some Sphingid
moths have caterpillars with no "horn" on the back end. Similarly,
it should surprise nobody who is experienced with diverse insects,
that there are other caterpillars out there that have "horns" on
their hind ends but are not in the Sphingidae. One that I have
photographed is called a "false hornworm", Pheosia rimosa, in the
family Notodontidae.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
