NOV. 3, 2011 - Gorgeous Sunny & warm day (ca. 12+ C. in Valley). In
early afternoon, over a grassy field adjacent to the Cornwallis River
in Port Williams, an adult red-tailed hawk was hovering in one spot
(without any significant wind) in the manner of a rough-legged hawk
or kestrel or kingfisher, and, instead of plummeting to the ground as
they often do, it slowly dropped with outstretched wings in stages
and gently dropped onto the ground. I couldn't see the hunting
outcome, but the hawk did not then fly off like they do when they are
empty-taloned.

Still in early afternoon, I walked the nice gravelly trails of
Miner's Marsh along the Cornwallis River and marsh managed by know-
how of Ducks Unlimited Canada in partnership with Kentville and
several other groups/agencies. I met James Churchill there, and he
had seen a great blue heron. It took me more than a complete circuit
of the short network of trails to see that heron, a juvenile, of course.

Also seen in Miner's Marsh were a single coot, presumably an American
coot, doing its characteristic cork-like shallow dives for food.
There were also 10+ mallards, most of them in female-male pairs.

No muskrats seen, but there were at least two conspicuous large,
conically-dome-shaped muskrat lodges among the cattails.

In Upper Canard my car windshield picked up a hitchhiker, a lady
beetle, and of course it was a multispotted Asian lady beetle; it
stayed on my car all the way to Canning.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
