Hi Ken=0ASilversides used to be very plentiful in the Northumberland Strait=
.=0AI'm hearing reports of big concentrations of them in Margaree lately.=
=0AI never get much time in that area any more so have no first hand knowle=
dge.=0AHowever there is reports of large numbers of Striped Bass in the Str=
ait.=0AI'm susprised Bancroft would not be aware of that.=0AQuebec is stock=
ing them in the St Lawrence - it was a wonderful fishery at one time.=0AThe=
m and sturgoen where the main fish for the weir fishery below Quebec City.=
=0AI had a wonderful talk with my wife's cousin of the fishery. It was his =
main source of=0Aincome for many years. You learn a lot talking with fisher=
men - even if they only speak French!=0AThere is some thought that they mig=
rate out the St Lawrence and along the Maritime=0Acoast to feed on Silversi=
des. As there is no legal fishery, reports are from by catch by=0Atrout ang=
lers - an open season is a bit complicated what with the Quebec stockings.=
=0AHard to predict the effect on the Silversides but should be include in t=
he discussion.=0AI know bird watchers are shy about talking to anglers when=
they are on the wharf=0Abut you might run it by any that you see.=0AThanks=
 for the report=0APaul=0A=0A=0A=0A=0A=0A________________________________=0A=

752-7644=0A=0AHi all=0AYesterday afternoon, Bob Bancroft and I did a =0Alit=
tle road=A0tour around Pictou Harbour prior to Bob's presentation to =0APic=
tou Co. Naturalist's last night. Of note was a Snow Goose with Canada Geese=
in a yard near the end of Company Rd. in Abercrombie. This =0Alooks like t=
he bird that was on the Glen Lovatt and Linacy Golf Courses last =0Aweek. M=
aybe it had just done a round at the Abercrombie course!!=0AI was commentin=
g to Bob on the lack of large =0Aconcentrations of Bonaparte's Gulls and me=
rgansers this fall and early winter in =0Aboth Antigonish and Pictou Co. Nu=
mbers are no where near what has been typical =0Afor the last decade and ei=
ther I am just missing birds that are around, or =0Asomething is happening =
that is changing their migration pattern. At times there =0Aare mergansers =
still not as many as in the past. I also notice that scaup in the =0APictou=
rivers are not in the usual numbers either. I am wondering if something =
=0Ais happening to the food supply to change the migration pattern. As far =
as I can =0Atell, the mergansers and Bonaparte's Gulls are here because of =
Atlantic =0Asilversides. I know that for the last few years there is an exp=
erimental fishery =0Abeing allowed in Antigonish Co. and Bob said also on P=
EI. I have a suspicion =0Athat the fishing pressure might be too heavy and =
there is no longer the food for =0Athe thousands of small gulls and mergans=
ers that were wonderful to watch feeding =0Afrenzies. It is my feeling that=
this experimental fishery should be examined =0Aclosely. =0A=A0=0AAt the m=
eeting Harriet MacMillan from Lochaber =0Areported Red-bellied Woodpecker i=
n Lochaber and another in the =0AWest river area of Antigonish Co. =0A=A0=
