*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
*
*Some events in the changing sky for Jan 08-14

On Saturday, Jan. 8, the MOON [Lune] goes into its full phase, and will be
visible all night, to brighten clear nights. Expect higher high tides and
lower low tides.

We are nicely into January, and VEGA, the so-called summer star, still
shines brightly in the NW, right after dusk, although it's getting quite
low.

At this time of year the LITTLE DIPPER [Petit Ours] hangs straight down
from POLARIS in early evening.

On Saturday, Jan. 7, the SUN [Soleil] rose at 8:01 a.m. and sets at 4:50
p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 14, it will rise at 7:58 a.m. and set at 4:58 p.m.

**This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure], at magnitude -0.4, is lower in the dawn every
morning. About 30 minutes before sunrise, look for it just above the
southeast horizon. Binoculars help. Don't confuse it with Antares, very far
to the upper right.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] at magnitude -4.0, is the brilliant "Evening Star" shinin=
g
in the southwest during and after twilight. It will continue to move a
little higher every week, all winter.

*MARS*, at magnitude +\0.0, rises in the east around 11 p.m., far beneath
the star *REGULUS*. Mars is brightening rapidly, as it approaches the
earth. It shines highest in the south around 5 a.m.

*JUPITER*, at magnitude -2.5, shines highest in the south at dusk. It moves
lower towards the southwest as evening advances , and sets in the west
around 2 a.m.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.7, rises in the east around 2 a.m. and
is high in the south at dawn. *SPICA*, a bit fainter at magnitude +1.0 is 6
or 7 degrees to its right or upper right.
