Hi Paul & All, Jan 7, 2012
Good news and bad news. Good that the mill jobs are saved and the =
land protected but this increment to the Provincial debt will last much =
longer than either the jobs or protected status of land & NDP votes. =
But, on the other hand, could the government have done otherwise ?=20
$2,350/ha seems quite steep for land that the company can't break =
even on, especially for land that would have sold for ~$10/ha 60 years =
ago. International Companies are by nature opportunistic and predatory, =
especially in tough times. For example, when Abitibi-Bowater went =
bankrupt recently they voided the value of current shares, issued a new =
batch and resumed business as usual.
Will the poor overburdened NS taxpayer have to buy this same land =
again in a few years to buy time for a yet smaller mill operation ?=20
While these industrial giants come & go, traditional logging with =
oxen is profitable and maintains forest integrity (the recent issue of =
Can. Geographic that I can't find; Hiltz in New Ross ?) if one is =
content to work hard for just enough income to scrape by on. Perhaps the =
next $20+ million forestry handout (that we can't afford) should be =
directed to foster truly sustainable primary industry approaches like =
logging by oxen.
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville
