*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
*
*Some events in the changing sky for March 11-18

*The *BIG DIPPER* [Grand Ours] glitters high in the northeast these
evenings, standing on its handle.

*Daylight Savings Time* begins at 2 a.m., Sunday morning, Mar. 11. Clocks
spring ahead one hour.

On Wednesday, March 14, the *MOON *will go into its last quarter phase,
meaning that it will rise at midnight and set at noon.

On Saturday, Mar. 10, the *SUN *[Soleil] rose at 6:44 a.m. and will set at
6:23 p.m. On Saturday, Mar. 17, it will rise at 7:31 a.m. and set at 7:32
p.m.*

**This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure] is still about the same height above the western
horizon in twilight, as it was last week, far below to the lower right of
brilliant Venus and Jupiter, but it's fading, from a weak magnitude +0.5 on
Mar. 9 to an essentially invisible +2.4 on March 14.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] and *JUPITER *have their spectacular conjunction in the
western evening sky this week. These are the two brightest celestial
objects, after the Sun and the Moon, at magnitude -4.3 and -2.1,
respectively. They appear closest together, separated by only 3 degrees, on
March 12-14. After that Jupiter moves away, lower.

*MARS*, about magnitude -1.1, shines bright fire-orange low in the east
during twilight and dominates the eastern sky after dark. The star *REGULUS
*twinkles about 10 degrees to its upper right. Mars shines highest in the
south by midnight.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.4, rises in the east around 10 p.m. and
shines highest in the south around 4 a.m. Accompanying it, 6 or 7 degrees
to the right or upper right is the star *SPICA*, a little fainter at
magnitude+ 1.0, and bluer. Saturn's rings are tilted 15 degrees from our
line of sight, their most open since 2007, and readily seen with a birding
scope.
