*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE*

*Some events in the changing sky for March 17-24*

*
*As the stars come out, look south for brilliant *SIRIUS*. It's the bottom
point of the Winter Triangle. The triangle's other corners are *PROCYON*,
to the upper left of Sirius, and *BETELGEUSE*, to the upper right. Compared
to the Summer Triangle, the Winter Triangle is brighter, more colourful,
and equilateral.

When darkness falls, look northwest for V-shaped *CASSIOPEIA *standing on
end.

On Tuesday morning, March 20, *SPRING *begins. The equinox comes at 2:14
a.m. when the Sun crosses the Equator on its way north. The *SUN *[Soleil]
rises and sets almost due east and west and day and night are about equally
long. In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn begins.

This is the time of year when the dim *LITTLE DIPPER*, juts to the right
from *POLARIS*, its handle end during evening hours. The much brighter *BIG
DIPPER* [Grand Ours] curls over high above it, dumping water into it.

On Thursday, March 22, the *MOON *[Lune] will go into its new phase,
meaning that it will rise and set with the sun, to make for dark nights.
Expect higher high tides and lower low tides. It could be a great few days
to check out the tidal bore on the Petitcodiac River, from Bore Park.

On Saturday, Mar. 17, the *SUN *rose at 7:31 a.m. and will set at 7:32 p.m.
6:44 a.m. and will set at 6:23 p.m. On Saturday, Mar. 24, it will rise at
7:18 a.m. and set at 7:41 p.m.*
*  *
**This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure] has faded right out as it drops back into the glow of
sunset. It's next good evening apparition won't come until the second half
of June. 4 on March 14.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] and *JUPITER *are moving apart now but still are
spectacular in the western evening sky. Venus remains shining at almost the
same point all this month and next, but Jupiter is sliding lower. After the
Sun and Moon, they are the next brightest celestial objects, currently at
magnitude -4.4 and -2.1, respectively.

*MARS*, at magnitude -1.0, shines bright fire-orange low in the east during
twilight and dominates the eastern sky after dark. The fainter star *REGULU=
S
*glows about 7 degrees to its right or upper right during early evening.
Mars is at its highest in the south around 1 a.m.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.3, rises in the east around 10 p.m. and
shines highest in the south around 4 a.m. Accompanying it, 6 degrees to the
right or upper right is the star *SPICA*, about half as bright, at
magnitude + 1.0, and bluer. Saturn's rings are tilted 14.5 degrees from our
line of sight, their most open since 2007, and readily seen with a birding
scope on a clear night.*
