I would say it is much more a way of keeping up with the times.  

I rarely get emails from anyone other than NatureNS and businesses that I get occasional updates from. 

All of the people I communicate with regularly have moved on to Face Book, Face Book chat or messaging and texting.  Even my 75+ year old aunt has moved over to Face Book for communication.
