Hi Richard, Andy & All. Apr 19, 2012
This reminds me of the Tower of Babel. Only in this case, technology =
seems to have assumed the role of God.

INFO?

  Hi all,

I also didn't know the NSBS had a Facebook page. I have just applied =
to join the group, as I already have a Facebook account. I also agree =
that method of communicating info about birds and nature in NS are =
becoming rather fragmented - i.e. now, to really find out what's going =
on, I need to look at e-mails from NatureNS and NS-RBA, and now Facebook =
groups for NatureNS and also NSBS. If I want to report something, I'm =
expected to do it on EBird, NatureNS, NSBS to Lance, and now 2 Facebook =
pages. If I want to show some pictures to the most people, I have to =
upload them to my Smugmug account, then send several different e-mails, =
put a link on my own Facebook page, and now 2 others, plus the photo =
section of NS-RBA. By the time I have done all this there's no time left =
for birding! It would be very nice if the board of the NSBS would widely =
disseminate the info about the Facebook page, and it would be nice to =
have a single method , preferred by everyone on the internet, to most =
efficiently communicate all this stuff. In addition to all this, then =
there's the NSBS magazine, which I still like to read.

Interesting that despite all this so-called internet efficiency, many =
people still apparently don't know about either the Facebook page or the =
Spring migration count.

  My 2c. worth.

  Richard

    Dear Everyone:

The wonderful thing about the Face book group (216 members and more =
are added each week) is that there seems to be a sense of community of =
interest. Why we just finished having a Shorebird ID contest, followed =
by a Warbler ID contest and folks are posting pictures of what they saw =
that day. We also follow the antics of "Chimney" who by the way has his =
own page, along with "Snowbird", "Little Wing" and "Snowberry"-all =
starlings (one of whom was orphaned and hand raised by one of our =
members). Vogel, the Common Gallinule at Red Bridge Pond is a star =
attraction. The biggest success is that we now have members who are all =
over NS, Atlantic Canada, some in the States and at least one in Europe =
who is planning a trip to Cape Breton.=20

We post about upcoming NSBS field trips and other tidbits of =
information.

It has allowed beginner birders who may have been a bit too shy =
about saying how little they knew about birds to be involved and learn =
more. There is no pressure to twitch or to create lists. People are =
free to post pictures (all of them are good) and to ask questions such =
as what should we put on the windows to prevent strikes. We have =
pictures of common birds such as starlings and of very rare birds such =
as golden-winged and prothonotary warblers. People are very helpful to =
each other and the group is a wonderful social networking tool that has, =
I believe, increased the profile of the NSBS.

You can join if you want or not if you don't want to.

PS. We are not the only one who have a Facebook group: Nova Scotia =
Nature Trust and a variety of others groups do.

I would say it is much more a way of keeping up with the times. =20

I rarely get emails from anyone other than NatureNS and businesses =
that I get occasional updates from.=20

All of the people I communicate with regularly have moved on to Face =
Book, Face Book chat or messaging and texting. Even my 75+ year old =
aunt has moved over to Face Book for communication.

Tuma and I are the admins and membership is up over 200, many of whom =
are active participants. It's become a fun place for people to ask =
questions, post pics and generally share bird info. Anyone can join as =
long as you have a facebook account, which anyone can have.=20

If you are uncomfortable giving your usual email address set up a new =
