   On Victoria Day I had a chance to observe gaspereaux, by the dozens, =
ascending the shallow rapid (and the old log canal) between Frasers and =
Maple lakes near Timberlea, in the future Blue Mountain - Birch Cove =
Lakes Regional Park. It was quite the sight, watching them maneuvering =
in running water shallower than their bodies.
   And yesterday I witnessed other gaspereaux at the lower end of the =
metal culvert, near Mill Lane, through which "Sawmill River" flows =
downstream of Sullivans Pond in downtown Dartmouth. These fish were =
trying to swim against the smooth current inside the culvert. Of course, =
they cannot make it past the culvert, its darkness, and the low-head dam =
at its upper end...
