JUNE 6, 2012 - In evening I was in Halifax for the start of the
Oceans Film Festival, three consecutive Wednesdays of marine-
conservation-themed films. Tonight's was on sea turtles, and
entitled "TURTLE: The Incredible Journey", about the 10,000-km.
circular migration of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, from hatching on a
beach in Florida to the North Atlantic, across to Europe, down toward
Africa, then back across to the Caribbean, then northward back to the
beach of that turtle's birth. I believe the film said that it takes
21 years for a loggerhead turtle to mature, but then it might live up
to 50 more years to return to that beach every 2-3 years to lay more
eggs.

Before and after the film, Kathleen Martin of the Canadian Sea Turtle
Network gave a short illustrated talk about Leatherback Sea Turtles
and then answered questions about sea turtles (7 species in Canada,
all Endangered both federally and provincially) and the film.

Kathleen mentioned that the Nova Scotia season for Leatherbacks,
usually from June to Oct. (exceptionally to Dec.), has begun for
2012: there was an entanglement with fishing gear in the Lunenburg
area on May 25; and today (June 6) Kathleen got a call and photograph
of a Leatherback seen by a commercial fiherman (one of 400+
volunteers for the CSTN) off Jeddore, Eastern Shore.

Next Wednesday's film (June 13) is "SALMON WARS: Aquaculture, Wild
Fish, and the Future of Communities", a documentary supervised by
Silver Donald Cameron, and playing in Halifax at 6:30 p.m. (Citadel
High School, Spatz Theatre, 1855 Trollope St.), in Wolfville at 7
p.m. at the Whittle Theatre, and in at least 3 other communities
(Port Mouton?, Annapolis?, Shelburne?, and Freeport? All films in
this 3-Wednesday series are free, no tickets, or free-will
donations. I believe this film will also be available via the
Internet.

Then on Wed., June 20, at 6:30 p.m., at the N.S. Museum of Natural
History, 1747 Summer St., Halifax, there will be five short films
shown: "Hinterland Who's Who" by Sean Brilliant; "Untangling the
North Atlantic Right Whale" with Tonya Wimmer (WWF-Can.); "Thrill of
the Catch" by Jared Corke, Brendal Davis, & Aurelie Godin; "Ship to
Shore" by Martin Hellmich & Ashley David, Clean Nova Scotia; and
"L'Nuk: The People", presented by Randy Angus, Mi'kmaq Confederacy of
Prince Edward Island.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
