JUNE 7, 2012 - On Beckwith Ave. close to home in Wolfville, I again
encountered a male pileated woodpecker on the ground, working the
edge of a lawn along the curb and pecking at the ground; I'm guessing
it was foraging on ants that were at the ground surface there; the
woodpecker was quite approachable by me in my car. This has happened
twice for me in Wolfville in the past week, and at least three other
people have mentioned the same kind of sighting, all in Wolfville.
Also today my dentist, Andy Nette, told me about an active pileated
woodpecker nest in a poplar? along Kent Avenue in Wolfville (I will
check this out and report on it later).

Gesner's Pond (Middle Dyke Rd., n. of Kentville): 2 Canada geese, 3
male mallards, and 2 small, brown-backed, very fast swallows (bank
swallows?) flying back and forth over the pond surface, but not close
enough for identification.

Eagle Landing subdivision, n. of Kentville: bald eagle nest has two
fairly large nestlings getting feathered out, and adult male was
perched next to the nest.

Miner's Marsh, Kentville, at mid-day: 1 male n. shoveler, 1 sora
whinnied just once while I was there, 1 e. kingbird, lots of male
mallards and several moulting toward eclipse plumage, at least 4 hen
mallards with broods 1/3 to 1/2 grown. 2 Am. black ducks, lots of red-
winged blackbirds, unseen warblers singing (yellows?).

Plants in bloom included bur-reed and highbush cranberry and quite a
few other species, like common dandelion, hawkweed sp., etc.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
