Hi David:
=20
Thank you. The bug that we saw was more elongated and thinner then the one=
 in the picture. The abdomen was the same size as the rest of the body=2C =
but pure orange. The orange section was larger then the rest of the body=
=2C with head and wings which were pure black. In my earlier posting I sai=
d the size was about one inch=2C but it was actually closer to an inch and =
a half in size. =20

Sincerely=2C

One possibility is a broad-headed bug (Alydidae). A common species in old =
fields in Nova Scotia appears all black=2C until it flies. Then the bright =
reddish abdomen is obvious.

I tried to get a picture of a wasp/beetle that I saw at Keji Seaside Adjunc=
t Yesterday. It took off and went deep into some foilage before I could sn=
ap the shutter. I've not seen this particular beast before. It was very l=
arge=2C about 1 in or close to it. All black=2C but very thin with a brigh=
t orange abdomen. In some ways it reminded me of a fake wasp=2C but in oth=
er respects of a large bettle of some sort. Any ideas from those with an i=
nsect background?
