Today we saw the first juvenile Red-bellied Woodpecker, for which we
have been waiting all summer! Last winter we had a female coming to the
feeders, and she was joined by a male in the spring. They began a nest
in a dead tree behind our house, but something happened and it was
abandoned. We hoped they would make a second try, but saw no signs of
it, though they continued to come to the feeders. So today was a
red-letter day for Red-bellied Woodpeckers! So far we have seen only
one juvenile, of which we got some good pictures. It is still being fed
by the parents, so we hope to get pictures of that soon.
