Hi Jim & All, Aug 29, 2012
Is it not also possible that a surfeit of squid could be partly a =
consequence of fewer large fish to 'bite em' ? I suspect that O'Dor made =
this point and it somehow got lost; otherwise why discuss the changes in =
size distribution of fish ?
My now ancient copy of Collins (1959) gives the range of Loligo =
pealei as Nova Scotia to Florida (now as far north as Newfoundland) and =
Illex illecebrosus as Greenland to Gulf of Mexico.=20
So there has been a potential for opportunity to eat squid here; =
Illex if not Loligo until recently. Is Illex inferior as human food to =
Loligo or do neither keep/freeze well ? Or is availability too erratic =
for a market to be established ?

THANKS to Janet Eaton for sending me this very timely article on =
longfin squids, Loligo pealei, by Dalhousie Univ.'s Ron O'Dor, dated =
Aug. 28, 2012. Note in the accompanying photo a squid jig lying next to =
a longfin squid, clearly showing the telltale long fins on both sides of =
the mantle (vs. the much shorter fins of the shortfin squid, Illex. Jim =
