Hi all=20
I did some birding early yesterday,Sept 4 at Big I.=20
I was greeted at the causeway by a couple of American Pipit. I had seen =
one on a brief visit the day before. At the beach by the east end of the =
causeway, a couple of promising looking shorebirds flew in and landed =
and proved to be Buff-breasted Sandpipers. I always had found this a =
species hard to find in Pictou Co., but I seemed to be having more luck =
the last 3-4 years. I believe Karen and Lit MacLeod had seen =
Buff-breasted a few days earlier.=20
An imm Great Cormorant continues along the inner shore of the causeway ( =
easterly end). All along the causeway, and indeed through the island, =
were many Savannah Sparrows. In my count I had close to 70, but there =
were many more not counted.=20
I had 9 species of shorebird missing the 2 Red Knots I had the previous =
evening. I also had 13 species of warbler including 35 Myrtle, 12 =
Yellow, 16 Common Yellowthroat, a male Wilson's, 6-7 each of Magnolia, =
Redstart and Parula. Like James Hirtle, there was a large flock (114) of =
Green-winged Teal. There had been Blue-wings with them last week, but =
none detected in the group this time.=20
There were a couple of Black Swallowtails- I was hoping for =
Short-tailed, but I don't think. I have a photo of one for further =
study!
I ended with a respectable 71 species of bird with a bit of effort. =
Results were posted to ebird.=20

cheers
ken
