Great thread!

The yardarm is that part of the yard outboard of the slings used to attach
the yard to the mast. The bunt of the yard is between the slings.

Not to be contentious or confusing - I'm certainly no pro - but In my
moderate experience recreational sailing and as a high school/college
student running the tender in a fair sized east coast yacht club/marina,
I've heard the term spar used generically to denote any pole, vertical or
horizontal -- mast, boom, gaff, spinnaker pole etc - used to support a
sail. I've also heard the term 'mast' used interchangeably with 'pole'
and 'stick'.

And for a definitive education on all things nautical in the great age of
sail you can't do any better than the Aubrey/Maturin series by the late
great Patrick O'Brian - part of which(The Surgeons Mate I believe) is set
in Halifax. Outstanding read and perfect for long winter nights!
