Gayle and Paul et al., actually I believe it is the painted turtle in  
which the eggs hatch in Fall but the hatchlings overwinter in the  
nest before emerging in the Spring.  I don't recall whether the  
snapping turtle occasionally does this, too?  But I am forwarding  
this to John Gilhen for some definitive word on this.  Cheers from
