Gary,
   look for mink droppings; they are extremely common along our waterways. 
They are tiny cylinders, maybe 5 mm wide. The animals deposit them at 
prominent locations such as the ends of floating logs and on rocks 
surrounded by water, presumably to mark territory. I have seen no mink, but 
many of their droppings earlier today while canoeing Hants County's Herbert 
River.
