Hi All,
I find much on the internet about biology etc. but only the =
alternate name, baitfish, hints at commercial usage. Are they used for =
lobster bait, to bait eel traps only or for baiting hooks ?
Interesting that they like a water temperature of 21o C and ample =
oxygen.

Thanks, Mike. "Trap" in the subject line was my word, not Ken's. =
Your comments are useful to Ken's question about by-catches. Jim in =

Trapping they mean fur bearing animals not fish. the silverside =
nets catch little other than silversides and smelt which is a fishery =
open at the same time. Migrating salmon, trout, shad and gaspereau have =
all gone to sea at this time or are in freshwater wintering areas.

Here is part of an e-mail message from Ken McKenna, dated today, =
mostly about birds:
...We noted nets set up to catch Atlantic silversides? in 4 =
locations: Jimtown, Cribbons Wharf, Ballantynes Cove and Lakevale. The =
net at Lakevale is below a sign that says HABITAT AREA- NO HUNTING OR =
TRAPPING!
I think last year I wondered what the impact of this fishery was =
having on the migrating species that use these harbours each fall.
