Hi All,
Thanks to Paul for forwarding Ian Harte's interesting observation of =
Harlequins off Louisbourg light recently. Have had some problems =
posting messages to NatureNS starting in mid-Oct so I don't know whether =
my previous report went through or not.
I was a participant in the Wild For Waterfowl Count (18 Nov 2012), =
organized jointly by BSC and NCC, which surveys several IBA sites along =
the South Shore From Port Joli to Sable River Bay for waterfowl numbers. =
My team was tasked with walking into Keji Seaside NP, as we had done in =
2011. We noted lots of waterfowl but most remarkable to me were the =
number of Harlequins off shore near seal rock. This year we counted 46, =
last year we noted 62. In addition, another group counted 61 at =
Johnston's Pond in 2012.
How these numbers figure into the big picture for this species-at-risk I =
do not know. All I can say is that it would require a massive effort to =
census this species along the whole NS Atlantic coastline!!
Regards,
Bob McDonald
Halifax

Very interesting observation Ian.
I will forward it to NatureNS so everyone interested can see it.
I would like to know if you get the info from the band back!
Thanks
Paul

Hi there .
I am one of the guys who reported the eider duck with the worn =
out numbers on the band.
Susanne Myers gave me your contact email.
I not sure if you are interested in my observation from today =
but I think it is a significant find.
I observed 36 Harlequin ducks today on the eastern shore of =
the Louisbourg Light house trail.
I was about 15 feet above their heads when they all come up =
from a dive.
They got wind of me and battered away from me.
I watch them fly to the east of me for about 1 km or so.
Not sure if this info is important or not but It sure is very =
rare for this area??
All the best.
