I was talking to a young fellow who is taking the NSCC Natural Resources En=
vironment Technology course in Bridgewater. He told me they did a field tri=
p to the Sheffield Mills area a couple of weeks ago and discuss the Eagle W=
atch during the Ecotourism part of their course. =0A=0ANancy=0A=0A=0A=0A=0A=

 JAN. 26, 2013 -- 22ND ANNUAL EAGLE WATCH at Sheffield Mills -- Relative to=
what weather =0A> we have had over the past week or more, today was gorgeo=
us , Sunny and wind-free in the =0A> morning, fairly warm at -10 C., and pe=
rfect for the first day of this year's Eagle Watch -- also =0A> perfect for=
our annual count of eagles and raptors in eastern King's County (more on t=
hat to come =0A> later). The afternoon got warmer to -8 C. but also windy w=
ith a resulting wind-chill.=0A> =0A> This morning at home I checked my Nige=
r/thistle black metal feeder and found it empty, so I =0A> refilled it, hop=
ing for some of my neighbour's redpolls and siskins -- in the afternoon I d=
id see 2 =0A> common redpolls with a couple of goldfinches.=0A> =0A> In mid=
-morning I drove east from Wolfville to the Eye Road eagle-feeding site but=
saw only one =0A> bald eagle there, at the nest across the hwy. from the c=
hicken barn. Then I continued east to =0A> Grand Pre, then south to Wallbro=
ok -- 2 drake common mergansers were in the Gaspereau =0A> River just above=
the bridge. I drove west parallel to the river and spotted only a few perc=
hed bald =0A> eagles, no feeding concentrations.=0A> =0A> Then I drove to S=
heffield Mills, again only noting a few scattered bald eagles. At the =0A> =
Community Hall at 10:30 a.m. there were relatively few parked cars and peop=
le inside the hall, =0A> perhaps because many were at the viewing site at t=
he north end of Middle Dyke Road?? I was =0A> told that earlier in the morn=
ing there were plenty of eagles there, but they were mostly just =0A> perch=
ed in the trees around the feeding field.=0A> =0A> However, it was differen=
t by noon, when I snuck away from the Hall (partly to hear Quirks & =0A> Qu=
arks) and drove to the viewing site. I counted as many as 30 bald eagles on=
the ground at =0A> once, but there was lots of action so that the numbers =
changed rapidly up and down. A few =0A> immatures flew across the field and=
landed briefly, and about 20 ravens were also on the ground. =0A> I also c=
ounted at least 30 more perched eagles, for a minimum total of 60 but proba=
bly =0A> considerably more in the general area, with many in the air at onc=
e. There was plenty of room for =0A> manoeuvering my car and stopping brief=
ly to look before driving on and getting out of other's way. =0A> Number of=
cars there were well below what I expected to see.=0A> =0A> The eagles on =
the ground were relatively far from the photographers along the road, and t=
hree =0A> photographers has advanced about 20 metres into the field -- I wa=
s concerned about that, and I =0A> hope they didn't try to get any closer.=
=0A> =0A> Later, on my way home, I visited the viewing site again at about =
2:40 p.m. I only saw 3 perched =0A> eagle, and now on the ground were only =
20 great black-backed gulls and, surprisingly, a single =0A> herring gull -=
- we hardly ever see the latter at the feeding sites.=0A> =0A> Once again, =
go to www.eaglens.ca for details about the 22nd Annual Eagle Watch at Sheff=
ield =0A> Mills.=0A> =0A> Tomorrow's forecast is for up to -10 C. and partl=
y Sunny, perhaps another nice day for the drive =0A> in eastern King's Coun=
ty plus a pancake-and-sausage breakfast plus viewing of displays and =0A> v=
ideos plus shopping for eagle paraphernalia etc.??=0A> =0A> Cheers from Jim=
 in Wolfville.=0A> =0A> =0A>
