Thanks to everyone who helped out with the moss identification at my camp (East Dalhousie, Kings Co) and its strange burgundy/coppery coloration.

To summarize: The color is due to lack of chlorophyll at this time of year and the flat growth results from water stress (mosses depend on moisture in the air). According to Anne Mills mosses grow all year and this one is likely one of the haircap mosses (Polytrichum 
commune).
