*This Week's Sky at a Glanc*e
*Some night sky sights for March 8 - 16*

The *Big Dipper* glitters high in the northeast these evenings, standing on
its handle. The two stars forming the front of the Dipper's bowl (currently
on top) are the Pointers; they point to Polaris, currently to their left.
If you follow the curve of the Dipper's handle out and around by a little
more than a Dipper length, you'll arc to *Arcturus*, now rising in the
east. Draw a line diagonally across the Dipper's bowl from where the
handle is attached, continue far on, and you'll go to *Gemini*.

On Sunday morning, March 10, at 2 a.m. *Daylight-saving time* begins.
Clocks spring ahead an hour. We'll get it back in the fall!

It being March, bright *Sirius *is highest in the south on the meridian
after dark. Sirius is the closest naked-eye star that's ever visible from
mid-northern latitudes (aside from the Sun). It's only 8.6 light-years away.

On Monday, March 11 the *Moon *will go into its New Phase meaning we will
not see it at all during the night. Expect higher high tides and lower low
tides.

As soon as it gets dark now, the Big Dipper has climbed as high in the
northeast as Cassiopeia has sunk in the northwest.

On Saturday, March 9, the *Sun *rose at 6:42 a.m. and will set at 6:16 p.m.
giving 11 hours 34 minutes of daylight hours. On Saturday, March 16, the
sun will rise at 7:29 a.m. and set at 7:26 p.m. to give 11 hours 57 minutes
of daylight hours (These values are for Moncton, New Brunswick) Figures
reflect time change on March 10.
*
This Week's Planet Roundup*

*Mercury*, *Venus*, and *Mars *are hidden in the glare of the Sun.

*Jupiter *(bright at magnitude -2.3) comes into view high in the southwest
after sunset and dominates the southwest to west later in the evening. Left
of Jupiter is orange Aldebaran. They set in the west-northwest around the
middle of the night.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.4) rises in the east-southeast in late evening now.
Saturn shines highest in the south in the early morning hours.
