hi folks,

I'll have more to pass along about this soon(...), but if you're interested
in an estimate of how our migrants are doing on their journeys this spring
check out the monthly eBird maps. (Bear in mind that these maps show the
distribution of reports which might differ somewhat from the true
distribution for a number of reasons).

(If you would rather not use the links below, see instructions at end of
the email)

*Red-winged Blackbird reports in Feb*:
(if you compare to Jan, note that some of the surge in Feb is probably
caused by the Great Backyard Bird Count)

http://ebird.org/ebird/map/rewbla?neg=true&env.minX=-78.24548592500003&env.minY=41.76117875680187&env.maxX=-59.788454675000025&env.maxY=48.5585296128654&zh=true&gp=true&mr=on&bmo=2&emo=2&yr=2013-2013&byr=2013&eyr=2013

*Red-winged Blackbird reports in Mar*:
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/rewbla?neg=true&env.minX=-78.24548592500003&env.minY=41.76117875680187&env.maxX=-59.788454675000025&env.maxY=48.5585296128654&zh=true&gp=true&mr=on&bmo=3&emo=3&yr=2013-2013&byr=2013&eyr=2013

*Common Grackle in Feb:*
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/comgra?neg=true&env.minX=25.652859374509035&env.minY=-27.31796400180449&env.maxX=30.267117187009035&env.maxY=-25.15261029211526&zh=true&gp=true&mr=on&bmo=2&emo=2&yr=2013-2013&byr=2013&eyr=2013

*Common Grackle in Mar: *
http://ebird.org/ebird/map/comgra?neg=true&env.minX=-78.23999276093753&env.minY=41.744786656395256&env.maxX=-59.782961510937525&env.maxY=48.54398481842973&zh=true&gp=true&mr=on&bmo=3&emo=3&yr=2013-2013&byr=2013&eyr=2013

If there are too many points at that map scale the application will show
squares instead of flags. If you zoom in it will show flags, and sometimes
if you zoom back again to the previous scale it will continue to show flags.

*To do this without using the links above: *
*
*
1. go to the eBird site web app (explore data, Range and point Maps)
2. set the species
3. for date set 'current year' and in choose 'feb' to 'feb' or 'mar' to
'mar' etc.
4. For a good scale for seeing the Atlantic movements, set the location to
'maine, usa'
5. on the menu on the right side, choose 'show points sooner'. If there are
too many points at that map scale the application will show squares instead
of flags.

cheers,
James.
