The first turkey vultures I had seen were a number of years ago behind our
house. We had emptied the freezer and put the old meat down in the trees
for the critters to eat. I saw them hovering around and went with my movie
camera. They were trying to light in the tops of the hatmatac trees and
there was much flapping of wings trying to get balanced. I was so amazed by
the sight and trying to stay hidden so I could watch, that I completely
forgot to put the camera on my shoulder ( back in the beginning days of
video cameras). Since then it's common to see them for most of the year.
There are at least three hanging around the upper harbour and I saw a pair
in East Pubnico, near the old stone bridge, on Thursday. A friend who lives
near Barrington has 6 that come. she puts out "road kill" for them.
