I heartily agree with Dusan's explanation for some apparently  
aggressive behaviour for beavers, since I have had the same  
experience with muskrats and even woodchucks/groundhogs, when they  
are caught away from either the water or away from their burrow.  An  
angry muskrat is a formidable foe that anyone would be smart to avoid.

And Kevin left out his location from his initial observation in this  
thread.
