JULY 9, 2013 - In mid-afternoon I spent an hour walking the trail =
around Miner's Marsh in Kentville.=20
Common milkweed is abundant there and now at its peak of blooming =
with oodles of pink flowers, but no monarch butterflies were seen. =
Other plants in bloom include yellow loosestrife (not related to purple =
loosestrife), narrow-leaved cattail, bur-reed, oodles of goutweed (nasty =
weed), Canada thistle, hedge bindweed, evening primrose, St. =
John's-wort, knapweed, sulphur or rough-fruited cinquefoil, Deptford =
pink, Queen-Anne's-lace, etc. etc. =20
I also noted galls/swellings on willow leaves, possibly from =
sawflies?=20
Green frogs were calling, but no bull frogs were heard. =20
Red-winged blackbirds abundant as usual, and I saw a male feed a =
fully fledged juvenile. A sora rail whinnied close to me at 2:45 p.m., =
a bit east from the small bridge where the cross trail meets the main =
trail. At one point in my walk, not far in from the big bridge, I =
thought I heard the peeping of young ducklings, but I couldn't see them. =
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
