There were at least 10 of these relatively large (30mm) egg cases on
the front side of the shed last week:

When I ran a finger over them, the texture reminded me of styrofoam to
the point of even squeaking a bit.

Any idea to which group of insects they might belong?

The shed is 80' from a lake if that is relevant.
