Yes no doubt fathom as a measure had that origin. People had arms =
and managed to cope long before measuring devices came along.
I now see, on looking in several dictionaries, that my usage of span =
is not officially recognized. Except as yard, which is half a span.

Which is of course a fathom Dave.
Probably where fathom originated. We often used it
when fishing or setting lobster traps.=20
It was a span on shore - a fathom on the water.

Roughly 6'; fingertip to fingertip with arms spread. It is a handy =
