Jim,

yew berries are quite sweet. And very definitely edible. Only the seeds are reportedly poisonous, so do make sure you spit them out. i have eaten the berries many times. Years ago I petrified my next-door neighbour while chatting with him over the low yew fence that separated our properties. I casually put a ripe yew berry into my mouth, and he was convinced that I would die a slow and painful death. I spat out the seed and nothing intoward happened...

OCT. 31, 2013, ALL HALLOWS EVE (BOO!!) - On my walk in Wolfville I did my annual check on a planted tall female yew bush, and this year it has a bumper crop of lovely but poisonous? "berries" that must really be naked cones. Is it just the seeds that are very poisonous (along with other parts of the plant)? In recent years it has had few to no fleshy cones, but then in some years it produces a vast or mast crop of them. These "berries" are quite popular fare for certain birds like robins and mockingbirds. This particular bush is located right on the corner of Main St. and Oak Avenue, Wolfville (east of town).
