I agree that the most important root of the problem is irresponsible
cat-owners.  I also agree that public education, social pressure, and
speying and neutering are important parts of the  solution.

 

However, human nature doesn't change, and social mores change slowly.  We
have a cat overpopulation problem NOW, and spey-neuter programs fall into
the category of necessary but not sufficient.   I doubt that that will be
sufficient, and mercifully killing  problem animals does not trouble me.
Neither does Kings County's approach to the problem.  

 

My comments are motivated not by hatred of cats, but by concern for the
well-being of native species, and an awareness of the need to take
well-considered steps before we have all the information that some of us
feel is needed.

 

And let's stay mutually respectful of our differing opinions, eh?
