The meeting is open to the pubic. The main presentation will be: Acoustic Monitoring of Nocturnal Migrant Songbird, by John Kearney This talk will provide an introduction to acoustic migration monitoring, an= analysis of its advantages and disadvantages relative to other methods of = migration study, a presentation on the results obtained so far, and some su= ggestions as to how anyone can set up a microphone in their backyard to sta= rt listening to migration. John Kearney, is an environmental anthropologist with forty years of experi= ence working in a wide diversity of community, academic, and industry setti= ngs in Canada, South America, and Asia. His publications include numerous r= eports, journal articles, book chapters, and a book in the field of natural= resource management. He has also played a leading role in the implementati= on of community-based management in Canada. In recent years, John=92s compa= ny, John F. Kearney & Associates, has specialized in the environmental asse= ssment of the impact of wind energy facilities on birds in Nova Scotia. A n= umber of baseline studies and post-construction monitoring projects have be= en conducted in this new but rapidly expanding industry in the province. Th= e company has sought to set a high standard of data collection and analysis= in order to ensure that environmental assessments protect and conserve bir= d populations while contributing to the development of an environmentally s= ustainable wind energy industry. John F. Kearney & Associates has deployed = acoustic monitoring technology to study the vast number of birds that pass = unseen over wind farms during their nocturnal migrations in the spring and = autumn.
