Maybe the mallard-sized Cackling Goose?

In Ian McLaren's All the Birds of Nova Scotia he mentions that there are som=
e fall reports of this species in the province. But he also says they can be=
 confused with dwarfed Canada Geese or small subspecies of the latter which i=
s probably more likely.=20
