Earlier this week I checked on a Burnside site that I often visit during =
the nesting season. Storms have brought the nest down in the last 2 =
winters. Last year it was completely rebuilt by March 11 but there are =
no signs of repairs so far this year. Egg laying at this location was =
normally late March with the hatch coming in mid April and fledge in mid =
to late May.
My notes from May 1st last year " The young are now quite vocal, =
responding whenever one of the adults comes into view". They were at =
that point almost 2 weeks old with open eyes, I suppose vocalizations =
could have begun earlier in response to sounds and movement around the =
nest.

I have a few quick comments on ravens from the notes below:=20
(1) I think Ken's report of hearing young ravens in mid-April is too =
early -- the earliest date I recall for that in the tropical Annapolis =
Valley was about May 11, many years ago, on the Acadia Univ. campus.
(2) Reports of large numbers of ravens together in loose flocks, a =
common phenomenon at certain times of year at Grand Pre and west of =
Canning, are very probably all juvenile to yearling ravens, too young to =
be reproducing but quite possibly already paired up via their =
entertaining courtship activities, especially aerially. Check out Bernd =
Heinrich's two books on ravens for some very interesting reading.
(3) All across Canada the raven has changed from being a symbol of =
real wilderness and has become much more commonnear and inside towns, as =
well as choosing nest-sites right in towns and not just in trees but =
in/on human-made structures like barns, bridges, etc. Of course, here =
in Nova Scotia, especially the Valley, we have been used to ravens close =
to communities for several decades.
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
