Hi Helene,

Good question. I would read up on the issue (google bat emergency assessmen=
t and you=92ll find tons) and then write the federal Minister of the Enviro=
nment. I suspect they=92d reply that they=92ve been consulting the public a=
nd will have a listing soon, but that still leaves one wondering what's the=
point of an emergency assessment if it still takes ages to get these anima=
ls actually listed =97 which is needed to trigger the recovery end of thing=
s (identifying critical habitat, etc).

Cheers,
Andy

As it happens, COSEWIC is meeting in Halifax next week. Anyone who wants to=

dicated, and the quality of the status reports that they base their decisio=
ns on (the reports that summarize all the available info on population size=
, trends, threats, etc) have actually improved since SARA.

I reckon the weaker links in SARA are at the listing stage (e.g., still no =
listing of our bats years after COSEWIC=92s emergency assessment) and (as m=
any environmental groups have noted) the recovery stage (which is a totally=
separate process again =97 and overwhelmed and poorly funded).

Full disclosure: I=92ve written several status reports and, of course, my s=
pouse just happens to be chair of COSEWIC.

Cheers,
