Hi all

Snow storm was a factor in cancelling our last meeting which is now =
rescheduled for June. See below. Hopefully snow will no longer be a =
factor in the upcoming events. Come on out and support the speakers. I =
think you will not be disappointed.=20

1) May presentation

The next presentation of the Pictou Co. Naturalists club will be Tues. =
May 6 at 6:30 pm at the community room of the New Glasgow library. The =
topic will be Butterflies in the Maritimes with John Klymko. The =
presentation will be timely as I saw my first spring butterfly, a =
Mourning Cloak, over the past weekend. Come on out and learn a bit about =
these beautiful insects and how you might be able to contribute to the =
knowledge of the species in the Maritimes.=20

The Maritimes Butterfly Atlas - just one year left! Launched in 2010, =
the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas (MBA) is a five year citizen science =
project documenting the occurrence of butterflies in the three Maritime =
provinces. This is the first atlas of this scale for the Maritimes. The =
MBA is modeled after state-level butterfly surveys that are underway or =
complete in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts and after the Maritimes =
Breeding Bird Atlas. The MBA's purpose is to produce a snapshot of =
butterfly populations in the Maritimes today and provide a baseline =
dataset for the future. Information gathered will be used to inform =
conservation decisions, especially with regards to identifying species =
of conservation concern and their habitats. It will be valuable in the =
decades to come, as scientists examine effects of climate change and =
other disturbances on the distribution and abundance of native animal =
species. John Klymko, the Atlas director, will discuss the highlights of =
the project as it enters its fifth and final field season, and will =
provide a briefing on how you too can contribute to this conservation =
effort.=20

2) Reserve Saturday May 10 for the annual NS Spring Migration Bird =
Count. Feeder watchers as well as field observers are always welcome. =
Pictou Co participants can contact me at kenmcken@eastlink.ca for more =
into and to let me know if you can participate.=20

3) June presentation

The presentation postponed because of April snow storm will be =
rescheduled for Tues. June 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the program room of the New =
Glasgow Library. Cliff Sandeson will give a presentation on "The Art of =
Bird Photography". The presentation should end in time to see the =
spectacular Chimney Swifts enter the Temperance St. School which is =
near-by.=20
Cliff Sandeson is a retired teacher from the Truro area who has always =
enjoyed nature and nature photography. In this presentation, he will =
discuss the equipment necessary for bird photography, the camera =
settings that he prefers and will present 11 tips for better bird =
photography. He will conclude his presentation with a selection of =
images that will illustrate the points made in the first section of his =
program. Come on out and I am sure you will learn a few good photography =
tips and see some great bird photographs.=20

4) Notice of Nature Nova Scotia 2014 Conference and annual meeting at =
the Gaelic College, St. Anns, Cape Breton- May 30-June 1. Lots of nature =
walks, and talks, stargazing with both sessions for adults and also for =
Young Naturalists.=20
Some of the presenters lined up include:=20

a.. Erich Muntz - coyote research findings and hiker safety, CBHNP =20
b.. Deanne van Rooyen - geology of Cape Breton, CBU =20
c.. Peter Austin Smith - Pine Marten Introduction to Cape Breton, NS =
DNR =20
d.. Wally Ellison - visual tour of the Waterfalls of Cape Breton =20
Some great field trips are in the works including a hike to the Usige =
Ban Waterfalls and a boat trip to look at seabed creatures!=20
